Measure Overhead Door Rough Opening

Step 1 - Measure Door Width

Measure the width of the door opening at the widest point. This is the distance between the right and left sides of the finished opening. The inside of the garage door should be framed with 2" x 6" wood jambs.

Step 2 - Measure Door Height

Measure the height of the door opening at the highest point. This is the distance between the floor and the top of the finished opening.

Step 3 - Measure Sides

Measure the width of the areas beside the openings. 3 3/4" is required on each side for installation of the vertical track.

Step 4 - Measure Headroom

Measure the area between the top of the door opening to the ceiling. Door require a minimum of 12" of headroom for the door installation. An additional 3" is required for an opener.

Step 5 - Measure Backroom Distance

Measure the distance from the opening to the rear of the garage.
