Measure Steel Entry Door Rough Opening
Use the diagram below to measure the rough opening of your entrance. It is important to obtain precise measurements to determine the correct size of your new steel entry door.
Measure Inside Dimensions of the Door Jamb
Measure the width of the rough opening at the top, middle and bottom. The standard width of a steel entry door’s rough opening is 3’ 4” (40”) for a single door and 6’ 4” (76”) for a double door; make sure to add an additional ¼” of an inch on each side for room for the frame to shimmy. Measure the height of your finished rough opening from the floor to the bottom of the header. Measure in a few spots across the opening from bottom to top to make sure it is level. The standard height of an entry door’s rough opening is 7’ 2” (86”); make sure to add an additional ¼” of an inch on the top for room for the frame to shimmy.
